Booking tee times: what to know

If you've never booked a round before, here's the playbook.

📅

How far in advance to book

  • Weekend tee times: book 7–14 days out for popular courses.
  • Weekday rounds: 1–3 days out is usually fine.
  • Twilight rates (~3 hrs before sunset): cheaper, can often walk on.
  • Tournament season (spring/summer): plan 2–3 weeks ahead.
💵

Reading the price

  • Greens fee: the cost to play the course.
  • Cart fee: sometimes included, sometimes $15–25 extra.
  • Replay rate: discounted second round same day.
  • Resident rate: if it's a municipal course in your county/city.
  • Twilight / super-twilight: 30–60% off afternoon rates.

What "tee time" actually means

Your tee time is when your group starts hole 1. Plan to arrive 30–45 minutes early to check in, change shoes, hit the range, and warm up on the practice green.

Most courses send your group off in 8–10 minute intervals. Showing up at your tee time means you're already late.

📋

Public vs. private vs. resort

  • Public / municipal: open to anyone. Budget-friendly, may be busier.
  • Semi-private: members get priority but public can book limited times.
  • Private / club: members and their guests only. Need an invite.
  • Resort: open to anyone but priced higher; often pristine conditioning.
  • Daily fee: a high-end public course (think Bethpage Black).

Reading a scorecard

Every course publishes a scorecard. Here's what the numbers mean before you tee off.

TermWhat it meansWhy it matters
ParExpected strokes for a scratch golfer (3, 4, or 5)Sets your target — par is a great score for most.
YardageDistance from each tee to the center of the greenHelps you pick a club and visualize the hole.
Tees (black/blue/white/red/gold)Different starting positions by skill/distancePick the tee where total yardage matches your driver carry × 28–32.
Course ratingDifficulty for a scratch (0-handicap) golfer72.4 = harder than par; 69.2 = easier than par.
SlopeDifficulty for a bogey (~18-handicap) golfer (55–155, avg 113)Higher slope = bigger gap between scratch and average. Used for handicap.
Handicap (HCP) on the cardHole's difficulty rank (1 = hardest, 18 = easiest)Where strokes "pop" in match play.
Picking the right tees: if you're new to golf, play the forward-most tees. Total yardage 5,000–5,800 yds is great for high-handicappers; 6,000–6,400 for mid; 6,500+ for low. Walking up to the tee box of a course you can't physically reach is the #1 cause of slow play.

What to ask the pro shop when you arrive

Course conditions today

  • Are carts on the path only, or fairway?
  • Has the course been aerated recently? (Greens roll bumpy for ~2 weeks.)
  • Any hole closures or temporary greens?
  • Where's the GPS / sprinkler-head yardage marker?
📜

Local rules

  • Out of bounds — internal stakes vs. property line.
  • Lateral hazards / penalty drop areas.
  • Lift, clean & place ("preferred lies") if it's been wet.
  • Pace-of-play expectations (most courses post: 4 hrs 15 min).
